THE DISRUPTIVE CHILD IN SCHOOL
A teacher can see the disruptive child as someone who disturbs and interrupts the class continually or perhaps as someone who wishes to make the teacher look ridiculous, something which is very possible on occasions. However, as teachers it is also very necessary to see the disruptive child as a possible victim of some social, family, institutional or group situation which is conditioning him/her and provoking unease, fear and anxiety. Therefore before arriving at the conclusion that the child is out to make our life unbearable in the classroom, we need to eliminate any possibility of the child being a victim of any of the abovementioned situations. This is also a duty as well as a real challenge to our educational system.
What I am proposing here is to have some resources available to teachers that would permit them to know the reality of the disruptive child, and thus enable him/her to improve their situation, enrich their interior life and promote personal growth. This means in practice GETTING CLOSER to the child instead of DISTANCING him/her from us. Of course there are many difficulties, both internal and external, in implementing one or other of the discipline models in the classroom and in the school. I stated from the outset that our purpose above all is to help form “responsible citizens” during their stay in our educational institutions, one of the few places today where such a task is possible given the gradual disintegration of family life and society as environments where acceptable limits can be easily imposed.
One of the key issues is the need to combine acceptance and profound respect for the personal dignity of each student with identical firmness shown in not tolerating any lack of respect towards others, whether teacher or companion. This in itself will very often allow a notable reduction in the level of anxiety on the part of the individual student as well as in the group as a whole. It also invites consideration later on of the ever present problem of bullying in schools. We need to generate spaces for proper communication, encounter and reflection thus contributing to the formation of thinking, conscious persons. In other words, to promote classrooms as authentic laboratories of peaceful coexistence, freedom and mutual respect. The need for limits and guidance is all the more necessary today as the children have direct access to and use of the social networks provided by Internet. This is an area worth studying because of its incidence on school behavior and will be dealt with later on.

    Muchas gracias.
