¿VIOLENCIA y BULLYING, la diferencia? Spanish/English

Over the past year here in Argentina there has been a growing amount of space in the media given to the problems of bullying and violence in schools throughout the country. In other words the problems related with school discipline and the lack of preparation of the teachers to deal with it have finally begun to be taken seriously.

On the one hand it has been necessary to distinguish carefully between violence and bullying. On the one hand bullying in itself does not usually lead to serious acts of violence. On the other hand we know that there are many reasons for the violence among school children nowadays, one of which is the inappropriate use of the social networks leading to disputes that carry over into the classroom and school environment. There is also the ever present violence, both physical as well as verbal, witnessed within families, sections of the community that feel marginalised, as well as within society in general. Even on television it has become almost a form of entertainment. Our children and youth are not indifferent to such behavior and messages which seem to have become part of life.

One thing that is clear however is that if the teachers and the authorities of any particular school have not dedicated some time to planning and maintaining an integral school discipline program, such as I have outlined many times in this blog, the possibilities of being able to handle satisfactorily any bullying much less violence within or related to the school environment are very slim indeed.

What we have been witnessing is that the school authorities are ill-prepared and often react only when a situation of serious bullying or violence erupts within the school and in particular if it becomes public knowledge. That is now totally unacceptable.

Teachers cannot be expected to be able to resolve on the spot all bullying-related behavior, much less situations of violence, whether verbal or physical. Solutions to such behavior can only be found within a school-wide program, carefully drawn up and understood by all the teachers as well as the school authorities and expressly communicated to the parents.

It is now apparent that many of the stress-related symptoms suffered by teachers, one of the principal causes of the high teacher absenteeism in Argentina, is closely related to their incapacity and unpreparedness for handling behavior problems within the classroom. Teachers are not in a condition to resolve these problems on their own without the full support and accompaniment of the school authorities.

As the new school year commences here in the southern hemisphere we will be hearing more about these ever growing problems. While, on the otherhand, we are still hearing very little about the formal preparation of teachers and school staff generally for handling the topic of classroom discipline and management. We can't expect different results while continuing to implement the same inadequate proceedures.
